Eruption Occurred in Biscuit Basin Area
Park Area Closed Following Incident
A hydrothermal explosion shot a towering column of boiling water, mud, and rock into the air at Yellowstone National Park on Tuesday, July 23, 2024. According to the Yellowstone Volcano Observatory (YVO), the eruption occurred in the Biscuit Basin area of the park.
The YVO, which provides long-term monitoring of volcanic and earthquake activity in the region, reported that the hydrothermal explosion was a "small seismic event." However, no injuries or damage to park infrastructure have been reported.
The Biscuit Basin area has been closed to visitors following the eruption. The YVO is currently monitoring the situation and will provide updates as they become available.
