SAINT-ETIENNE, France -- Argentina came from 2-0 down to snatch a dramatic draw deep into 15 minutes of injury time in their Olympics opener against Morocco in Saint-Etienne on Saturday.
Morocco led the Group B clash 2-1 and in the final stages of the game Argentina hit the frame of the goal twice in a wild finale before midfielder Cristian Medina scored a last-gasp goal to salvage a point.
The draw leaves both teams with a point apiece after Japan beat Spain 1-0 in the other Group B game earlier on Saturday.
Morocco took the lead in the 39th minute when Napoli midfielder Azzedine Ounahi fired home a stunning 25-yard strike.
Sofiane Boufal thought he had doubled Morocco's advantage in the 53rd minute but his goal was ruled out for offside after a VAR review.
However, the African side did double their lead in the 63rd minute when Achraf Hakimi's cross was turned into his own net by Argentina defender Leonardo Balerdi.
Argentina pulled a goal back in the 77th minute when Julian Alvarez converted a penalty after Morocco goalkeeper Ahmed Reda Tagnaouti brought down Adolfo Gaich.
More than an hour later Argentina's goal was overturned and ruled offside The game then resumed for a few minutes of play with no fans in attendance after several supporters had invaded the pitch.
In the 105th minute, Medina's goal sparked wild celebrations on and off the pitch as Argentina snatched a point at the death.
The result will give Argentina confidence heading into their next game against Japan on Wednesday, while Morocco will be hoping to bounce back when they face Spain on the same day.
